EURO 2004 - BRITISH COUNCIL HOME PAGE
WHERE FOOTBALL, BRITAIN AND PORTUGAL MEET..

This is the British Council Portugal's Euro2004 page. We have lots of useful information on football, Portugal and the UK.

Before and during the tournament, the British Council worked closely with independent English fans' associations and local partners to organise fan forums, school visits, visits to charity organisations, mini-tournaments and a lot more for children and adults in and around Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and the Algarve.

You can see what we helped to organise on our Euro 2004 Events page and on Footballculture site.

On the cultural and literary side, we are have photographic exhibitions, book launches and new 'BritLit' teaching materials, workshops, theatre and cinema shows, poetry readings, slide presentations and lectures - all around football - in Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto.

And on the football side, did you know that even before the epic meeting in the Estádio da Luz, the England/Portugal match had a long history? And not only in football... Find out more in this article which also appears on our football website - footballculture. And why not visit the British Embassy's 'Welcome to Euro 2004!' page?

Fever Pitch

What do Arsenal supporters say about arch-rivals Spurs? Are the media right about English football fans? Why did young Nick's dad get cross after the match against Swindon?

The new BritLit kit, based on Nick Hornby's best selling 'Fever Pitch', answers these and many other questions in 50 pages of worksheets, ideas and projects for English teachers looking for a football theme for classes.

BritLit's first contribution to Euro 2004, looking at the game from the aspect of the fan, is available on-line at www.teachingenglish.org.uk.

Bend It Like Beckham

BritLit's second offering for Euro 2004 is based on 'Bend it like Beckham', which is better known as a film, but Dharinder Dhami's book of the same name follows the film faithfully, even reproducing some of the dialogue. The materials in this latest BritLit kit are based on the pivotal Chapter 7 of the book, and also make reference to the film.

An Indian teenage girl living in London is madly in love with her idol David Beckham and loves playing football in the park. Her family doesn't know about this because they wouldn't allow her to wear shorts, let alone play football. Their plans for her are to study law and then marry an Indian man. But she only dreams of playing football side by side with David Beckham. A new reality takes shape when she gets the chance to play for a local women's football team - a long as her parents don't find out! Then life gets more complicated as she finds her white, Irish coach rather attractive as well………

The materials provided follow the familiar pattern of BritLit kits, with a section looking at the main characters, a section which contextualises the main elements of the story, a look at the language and an opportunity to look at a linked text, in this case Antoinette Moses little tale "One of the Lads". It's on the teachingenglish site now
